The explosion near the Pacific island nation of Tonga was one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in decades. University of Arizona geologist Jay Quade has been gathering information about the blast and describes why it caught many researchers off-guard.

Jay Quade spoke with Leslie Tolbert, Ph.D. Regent’s professor emerita in Neuroscience at the University of Arizona.
