The Marana Regional Airport in Pima County currently lacks a control tower. However, that may change as officials plan for the development of a tower.
According to the town of Marana, this tower would improve airport traffic operations by allowing controllers to communicate with pilots and direct aircraft movements
Greg Sendlak is a project manager with the tower.
“We have never had a tower. This is a — we are an untowered airport at Marana Regional, and this’ll be our initial tower, brand new," he said
The airport attempted to move forward on the tower plans in 2019. However, the coronavirus pandemic and other roadblocks prevented the airport from building one.
“You have to have a fully constructed, commissioned tower built in five years, and it’s a very lengthy process. You need a sighting study, an environmental assessment, then design, then construct within five years and that didn’t happen," Sendlak said.
After the completion of an environmental assessment, the Federal Aviation Administration approved funding for the tower. Completion of the tower is expected for 2029.
