'I'm Trying to Surprise Myself'

Artist in constant quest for new ways to transform canvas

Jim Waid is known for his large abstract landscapes that are inspired by the natural environment. His home, near downtown Tucson, has a lush garden that could easily serve as inspiration for one of his paintings.

“We garden. I work outside, and I try to bring the outside into the work,” Waid says.

Waid works daily in his spacious studio, within view of his garden, and his style seems improvisational at times. He covers the canvas with large patches of paint and then scrapes and reinvents the surface to reveal color and light.

“I’m trying to surprise myself,” he says. “I’m trying to find new combinations of shapes and colors, always trying to get the colors more interesting and more intense.”

Waid’s work can be seen as part of an exhibition at Etherton Gallery.
