U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon won't challenge Sen. John McCain in next year's Republican primary election, Salmon has told the five-term senator.

McCain has announced his re-election run amid expressions of dissatisfaction with him and his voting record by conservative groups.

State Sen. Kelli Ward, R-Lake Havasu City, has announced her candidacy to unseat McCain. Also on the list among Republicans are businessman and Phoenix area radio host Alex Meluskey and Phoenix area radio host Clair Van Steenwyk.

U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is the only Democrat to have announced her candidacy for the Senate.

McCain chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. He spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He will turn 80 next August, before his current term expires.
