Could Reliably Red State Arizona Go Blue This Year?

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton leads Republican candidate Donald Trump 46.5 percent to 42.2 percent in an Arizona voter poll out Wednesday.

Arizona last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1996, when Bill Clinton beat Bob Dole.

What may be more surprising than a Democrat leading in usually red Arizona is the fact that most voters have made their choices. The poll showed 5.6 percent of respondents said they were undecided.

That means candidates must work hard for those last votes.

“You will have some heavy advertising eventually, but I don’t know that that would change many minds," Republican political consultant Barrett Marson said. "I think you are seeing people are very familiar with the two candidates so it is easy to make up your mind."

Trump visited Phoenix last weekend, days after Gov. Doug Ducey declared he would work to make certain Arizona remains a red state.

Clinton last visited the state the day before the presidential preference election in March.

The Wednesday poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
