The Tucson City Council has unanimously approved a bike-share program for Tucson.

Ann Chanecka, who runs Tucson’s bicycle and pedestrian program, called the approval a critical step in making the program a reality and enhancing central city development.

"I think this is another step in really creating a vibrant downtown that a lot of people choose to live near and also spend time in," Chanecka said.

Thirty bike stations will be installed around town, from Pima Community College West to Reid Park, although most of the stations will be downtown.

Tucson got $1.3 million in federal funding to set up the program. Riders will be charged to rent bikes. The price hasn’t been set.

The city will hire a vendor and operator in the next few months, and bikes should be available for use in 2017.
