Marijuana, Minimum Wage Initatives Await Court Review

Both measures under challenge; deadline for ballot certification is Tuesday.

The Arizona Supreme Court is expected to decide this week whether two voter initiatives make the November ballot.

The court is reviewing appeals of challenges to measures legalizing recreational marijuana and raising Arizona's minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 that were rejected by lower court judges.

Opponents of Proposition 205 argue the marijuana measure has a misleading summary that leaves out important provisions, that its text and title fall short of requirements and that it lacks a legal funding mechanism.

Challengers of Proposition 206 say a judge wrongly dismissed their challenge on grounds they filed too late. They say if that ruling stands the minimum wage measure makes the ballot even though they successfully challenged enough signatures to disqualify it.

Decisions are needed by midweek to meet deadlines.
