County cannot stop the agricultural company from operating in Marana.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors will hold a series of public hearings by late February on the Monsanto company’s plans to operate a Marana greenhouse to do corn seed research.

The board will then decide if it will support Monsanto’s federal application for a lower tax rate.

The supervisors heard hours of comments from the public Tuesday in opposition to Monsanto’s plans, although state law prohibits the county from stopping the company's operations on private property.

The supervisors agreed to create a science committee to address health issues related to Monsanto’s work.
