Sunday Commemoration Marks 6 Years Since Tucson Shooting

Events to commemorate the anniversary will take place over the coming week.

This weekend marks six years since a mass shooting took place at a Tucson grocery store.

Over the last few years, the event has been memorialized with the ringing of bells at the exact time a shooter opened fire at a Safeway on Tucson’s northwest side. Six people were killed and 13 were wounded, including former representatives Gabrielle Giffords and Ron Barber.

This year, on the sixth anniversary, the community is invited to come together to form a human embrace.

The January 8th Memorial Foundation is organizing the event. They say the embrace symbol - a sideways "8" or infinity sign - will show support for the community and others that have experienced tragedy.

It’s meant to communicate togetherness, solidarity and empathy.

The event takes place Sunday at Hi-Corbett field. Gates open at 1 p.m., and the program starts promptly at 2. People are being asked to wear white T-shirts.

Tributes will continue next Saturday, Jan. 12 at Beyond, a community-wide outdoor event started by the family of Gabe Zimmerman, who died in the shooting.
