Zika, malaria, west Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses kill an estimated million people each year around the world. A team of scientists at the University of Arizona have discovered a way to prevent the insects from hatching – they say it’s the first step in developing a mosquito birth control. If introduced in mosquito-prone areas of the world, the birth control could massively reduce mosquito populations and save millions of lives – without, they say, harming other species.
