Mayors from several Arizona cities, including Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, went to the state Legislature today to talk with lawmakers about the role cities and towns have in job creation.

Mayors from Phoenix, Glendale, Mesa, Chandler and Payson joined Rothschild, and said they want to let Legislators know their efforts at job creation will generate state and local sales taxes.

"The message I want to the state legislature is if you let cities do what they need to do...we are the people that really need to be motivated by the business community," Rothschild said.

Local governments can partner with the Legislature on economic development initiatives, said Mesa Mayor Scott Smith.

The group of mayors met with the Senate president, speaker of the House and officials from the governor's office.
