The latest meeting of the Arizona Town Hall focused on civic engagement.
Part of that discussion involved getting young people to the ballot box. But that effort need not start at age 18 when people can vote, said Jane Prescott Smith, managing director of National Institute for Civil Discourse, which participated in the Town Hall.
Instead, Town Hall participants called for curricula in elementary school to include teaching about civic engagement.
Getting people to the ballot box was not the sole focus of the discussion. So was civility.
"It's important when you want to get people engaged not to skirt the issues," said Smith in an Arizona Illustrated interview. "It's really important to get things out on the table."
