President picks scholars with Arizona ties to chair endowments for arts, humanities

A University of Arizona alum and ASU professor tapped to lead federal agencies promoting the arts and humanities.

President Joe Biden has tapped two scholars with Arizona ties to lead the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.

If confirmed by the Senate, Shelly Lowe would be the first Native American to serve as chairperson of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Lowe is a citizen of the Navajo Nation, grew up in Ganado and is a graduate of the University of Arizona. She serves on the governing board of the University of Arizona Alumni Association and is currently executive director of the Harvard University Native American Program.

The president also nominated Arizona State University professor Maria Rosario Jackson to lead the National Endowment for the Arts. She would be the first African American and Mexican American to serve as chair.
