Thursday at 5 p.m. is the deadline for groups to turn in petitions to get initiatives on the November ballot.
Several petition drives have been under way for a number of things people want voters to change in state law.
Nearly two dozen people or groups submitted applications for citizen initiatives with the secretary of state’s office. Most of those are not expected to make the ballot, but several high-profile ideas could.
If they meet the signature requirements, and to pass subsequent legal challenges that may crop up, the proposed changes in state law would go to voters to make the final decision in November.
The efforts range from setting limits on property tax increases, to changing the way the state’s primary elections operate. There are proposals that expand casino gaming, claim state sovereignty and eliminate protection from arrest for lawmakers, among many others.
In addition to the initiatives that qualify for the ballot, the Legislature referred seven questions to voters for this fall, all in the form of amendments to the state constitution.
