Tucson Unified School District Governing Board approved a first reading to a proposal that would allow for parents to access and review library materials that are borrowed by their child.
If passed, the change would also allow public review of any library books and materials purchased after January 1st, 2023. This excludes any purchases intended to replace lost or damaged books.
The proposal comes months after the passing of legislation that reinforces parental rights and parental involvement in school.
The last time the school district put funding towards library books was back in 2018, where the governing board budgeted $250,000 for the expenditure.
The proposed change will have a second reading at the next governing board meeting on Nov. 15 and will be open for public comment.
