The federal government is sending Pima County millions of dollars to keep services for asylum seekers open.

Pima County Board of Supervisors Chair Adelita Grijalva says the funding will allow the county to continue services through the end of the year.

“Now that the federal government has provided the funding, we feel confident that we'll be able to continue to provide a service for legal asylum seekers and protecting our community at the same time," she said.

The funding is part of $650 million that Congress recently appropriated to fund short-term services to migrants entering the country, typically to seek asylum.

More than $54 million is going to government fiduciaries and nonprofits in Arizona, including Pima, Maricopa, and Yuma counties for these services.
